Simplicity 3560 Keyhole Neckline Dress

I signed up for another MadMen dress challenge. See the button to the right for more details. I’ll be submitting (after finishing!) my Low Necklines dress.

Soundstitches blog Simplicity 3560I’m working on the keyhole neckline view from Simplicity 3560. I’ve got a tan and blue mid-weight stripe-y cotton with some stretch, and for the contrasting keyhole neckline and collar I am using another stripe, a shirt-weight cotton with the same colors. The combination says, “Spring!” to me, though in reality I’m sure I’ll have to wear it with tights until June!

Having tried on the bodice/dress already, I might add darts in the back bodice piece to give it more of an hourglass shape. I plan to omit the zipper because the keyhole neckline will add many more inches to the opening. I hope I’m right about that! If I can’t get into it I will have to add a zipper to a side seam.

The pattern is copyright 2007, obviously before any association with Project Runway. I acquired it from the Goodwill in the last couple of years, uncut. I am not a big fan of Project Runway patterns — I think they are very misleading for new sewers who must add fabric requirements for all the options while they are in the store. But, this pattern is so simple, with only darts, armholes and the back zipper in the way of challenges, that I think an intermediate who has tackled these tasks with some success would do fine with the dress overall.

“Spring!”

More news: Beppa is having its Button and Vintage Sale at 7760 6th Avenue NW on March 23 and 24 from 10-4. Take a trip to the lovely Seattle neighborhood of Ballard and shop for some unusual items. I’ve picked up some small quantities of nifty fabric there, and I love their old restored building.

During Beppa’s summer sale, I picked up a lovely orange-red rayon. Tables were stocked with lots of lovely fabrics. This time’s announcement says they will have scarves and accessories too. Stop by their great 1925 Ballard building this weekend. I enjoyed meeting Gretchen, one of the owners.
